Your PowerBook G3 Series goes to sleep when you close the display
The PowerBook's display must be open when you use an external monitor. Unlike the PowerBook (FireWire) or PowerBook G4, you can't use a PowerBook G3 Series computer with the display closed.

Disconnecting an external monitor
- Make sure your computer is shut down or in sleep.
- Make sure your monitor is switched off.
- Disconnect the monitor cable (for a VGA-style monitor) or monitor adapter (for an Apple monitor) from the external monitor port on the computer's back panel.
